The Daal Chawal Project draws its health equity and social justice roots from Pakistan, where “langars” organized near neighborhood mosques and saintly shrines distributed free plates of daal chawal to anyone who sat down to eat. Beyond the simplicity of spiced, slow-cooked lentils (daal) atop steamed rice (chawal), every plate is a nutritious meal in and of itself and is most definitely the ultimate Pakistani comfort food.
